Your Toronto Patio Should Be Comfortable All Summer

Toronto backyards get hammered by sun from June through September. Between the concrete radiating heat and narrow lots trapping warm air, your deck can feel ten degrees hotter than the forecast says. The patio set you spent good money on sits empty through the hottest part of the day, and umbrellas and pop-up canopies aren’t built to handle the wind that whips between Toronto houses.

A retractable awning changes how you use your outdoor space. Extend it when the sun is blazing, retract it when you want open sky or when the season ends. No fighting with poles, no dragging covers out of the garage. Just shade when you want it and full sun when you don’t.

Above All Awnings has been installing retractable awnings across Toronto since 1995 — brick semis in Leslieville, raised decks in High Park, tight lots in Roncesvalles, and everything in between. Owner Jamie Brow visits every property, assesses your mounting surface, and our own crew handles the full installation. Your awning is custom-sized to your space and built with Sunbrella fabric that won’t fade.

  • Block up to 98% of harmful UV rays
  • Lower indoor cooling costs by up to 25%
  • No building permits required for most residential installs
  • Works on brick, stucco, wood-frame, and masonry surfaces

Types of Retractable Awnings We Install in Toronto

Toronto homes range from Victorian semis to post-war bungalows to modern townhouses — and every outdoor space is different. We carry four awning types, and each one is custom-sized to your exact dimensions.

The Classic

Open Roll Awnings

The industry standard for high-quality shade protection. Our Adalia Open Roll awnings are manufactured locally in Vaughan, ON and built from extruded, thermally treated aluminum that’s immune to corrosion. Available with or without a heavy-duty hood cover, these awnings are vastly customizable to fit your exact space.

  • Custom widths starting from 6′2″ (in 1″ increments)
  • Projections up to 13′
  • Four powder-coated frame colours
  • Unbeatable 10-year warranty on manufacturing & fabric

Starting at $3,500 installed.

Budget Friendly

Manual Retractable Awnings

A reliable, cost-effective choice that uses a simple hand crank to extend and retract. Manual awnings use the same premium frames and Sunbrella® fabrics as our motorized models—without the motor cost. Perfect for smaller patios and decks.

  • Easy-turn hand crank operation
  • Same premium Sunbrella® fabrics
  • No electrical work needed
  • Upgradeable to motorized later

Starting at $3,500 installed.

Most Popular

Motorized Retractable Awnings

Extend or retract your awning at the touch of a button. Motorized models use whisper-quiet Somfy motors and can include built-in wind and sun sensors for fully automatic operation—your awning protects itself even when you’re not home.

  • Block up to 98% of harmful UV rays
  • Optional wind & sun sensors
  • Projections up to 14′ wide
  • 10-year motor warranty

Starting at $4,500 installed.

Premium Protection

Cassette Awnings

The ultimate in retractable awning technology. Cassette models feature a fully enclosed aluminum housing that protects the fabric, arms, and motor when retracted. Ideal for homes that want maximum durability and a clean, sleek appearance on the exterior.

  • Fully enclosed protective housing
  • Extends fabric lifespan significantly
  • Clean, modern aesthetic
  • All motorized features included

Starting at $5,500 installed.

Every retractable awning we install is built to fit Toronto homes and Toronto weather — here’s why homeowners across the city trust us.

Custom-Sized to Your Space

Toronto lots and homes vary wildly. We custom-measure every awning to your exact patio, deck, or balcony — whether it’s a narrow semi in The Beaches or a wide bungalow lot in Etobicoke. No off-the-shelf sizing, ever.

Our Own Installation Crew

Jamie, Alistair, Tony, and our team handle every installation personally. No subcontractors, no handoffs. The same crew behind our 5-star reviews is the crew that shows up at your home.

Premium Fabrics Built for Ontario

We use Sunbrella and other solution-dyed acrylic fabrics that resist UV fading, repel water, and stand up to Toronto’s humidity, pollen, and freeze-thaw cycles without cracking or moulding.

Local Manufacturing

Our awnings are fabricated right here in the GTA through our Vaughan and Burlington partner facilities. Faster turnaround, direct quality control — not shipped from overseas.>

Jamie Handles Your Project Personally

Owner Jamie Brow does every consultation and oversees every installation. You deal with the owner from first call to final walkthrough — not a sales rep, not a franchise manager.

Brands & Materials Behind Every Awning We Install

We are deliberate about what we install because our reputation depends on it performing for years. Here is what goes into every retractable awning we put on a Toronto home.

Sunbrella Fabrics Sunbrella is the standard for high-performance outdoor fabric. Their solution-dyed acrylic construction means colour pigments are locked into the fibre itself — not coated on the surface — so the fabric cannot fade from the outside in. The result is colour warranty of 10 years under direct UV exposure, combined with water resistance, mould resistance, and the ability to clean easily with soap and a soft brush. In Toronto’s urban environment, where fabrics face industrial air pollution, bird activity, and heavy pollen loads from the city’s tree canopy, Sunbrella’s cleanability and UV resistance are practical advantages, not just marketing claims. We carry 200+ colours and patterns and bring physical swatches to every consultation.

Rolltec / Adalia Frames Our primary frame supplier, Rolltec, is a Mississauga-based manufacturer that produces awning systems specifically tested for Canadian climate conditions. Their Adalia series uses extruded, thermally treated aluminum — not the softer alloys used in import products — with stainless-steel arm cables and precision-machined gear units. Because Rolltec is local, lead times are shorter, warranty service is straightforward, and replacement parts are available without international shipping waits.

Somfy Motors and Sensors Somfy has been the world leader in motorized shading for decades. Their tubular motors run on 120V AC, operate virtually silently, and carry a 10-year warranty. The Eolis wind sensor mounts on the awning’s front bar and communicates wirelessly with the motor — no additional wiring required. The Sunis sun sensor works the same way. The Somfy myLink hub connects all of this to your home WiFi so the Somfy app on your phone becomes the control interface. All of this integrates with Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, and Google Home.\

Markilux and Weinor For clients who want European engineering or specific design aesthetics not available in the Adalia line, we also install Markilux (Germany) and Weinor (Germany) cassette systems. Both companies are known for tight tolerances on cassette housing construction, which delivers the noise-free, fully sealed enclosure that makes cassette awnings worth the premium price.

  • From Colour Selection to Installation, A Great Experience

Super pleased with our new awning. The entire experience with Above All Awnings was great from our first consultation with Jamie to the installation with Alistair and Tony. Jamie is fantastic and really amazing to deal with. He helped us with choosing our awning and was also very patient as we wavered between colours :). We ended up going with light grey btw.

Alistair and Tony were exceptional with the installation. They were efficient with the job and took great care during the process. The awning looks quite modern and really complements our outdoor space. We are really happy with how it looks and the functionality of it.

Our deck was unbearable during peak sun times and now we are able to enjoy it in both rain and shine. I would highly recommend Above All Awnings.

Why a Retractable Awning Is the Best Shade Solution for Toronto

Toronto summers bring intense afternoon heat that’s amplified by the city’s concrete, asphalt, and tightly packed housing. South-facing backyards in neighbourhoods like Leslieville, Roncesvalles, and Leaside can feel significantly hotter than the forecast suggests. A retractable awning gives you on-demand shade without permanently altering your home’s exterior.

Unlike fixed awnings or pergolas, a retractable awning lets you choose how much shade you want, when you want it. Hosting a BBQ in the afternoon? Extend full shade. Want evening sun on the deck? Retract it completely. Storm rolling in? Retract and protect.

Our retractable awnings feature powder-coated aluminum frames that won’t rust, warp, or sag. The retraction mechanism — whether manual crank or Somfy motor — is engineered for smooth, quiet operation even after years of use. And Sunbrella fabrics hold their colour for 10+ years, even under direct Ontario sun.

For Toronto homeowners, the practical benefits add up fast. Indoor rooms stay cooler. Patio furniture and decking last longer. Heritage properties avoid the hassle of approval for permanent structures. And your family actually uses the outdoor space you invested in.

Key Benefits

  • Reduce cooling costs by up to 25%
  • Extend and retract in under 30 seconds
  • Protect furniture and decking from UV damage
  • Custom sizes up to 40 ft wide
  • 10+ year fabric colour warranty
  • Wind-sensor auto-retraction available
  • No permits or heritage review in most cases

East End Toronto

The Beaches, Leslieville, Riverdale, Danforth Village, East York, Little India, Greenwood-Coxwell — East Toronto is a mix of Victorian and Edwardian detached homes and semis, post-war bungalows, and newer infill builds. The Beaches sits directly on Lake Ontario and shares Mississauga’s waterfront wind exposure — wind sensors are strongly recommended for any property within a block or two of Lake Shore Boulevard East. The brick construction throughout the east end is something we handle every week.

West End Toronto

Roncesvalles, High Park, Bloor West Village, Junction Triangle, Etobicoke, Mimico, Humber Bay Shores — The west end has similar housing to the east: brick semis and detached homes in the inner neighbourhoods, transitioning to post-war bungalows and newer builds as you move out through Etobicoke. Humber Bay Shores is a waterfront condo corridor where balcony awnings and patio installations are in demand. Etobicoke’s larger lots accommodate wider awnings than is typical in the inner city.

Midtown Toronto

Leaside, Lawrence Park, Forest Hill, Davisville Village, Midtown, Yonge-Eglinton, Mount Pleasant — Midtown Toronto’s larger single-family homes, established landscaping, and significant backyard sizes make it one of our busiest areas. Many mid-century bungalows and two-storeys have wide south or west-facing decks perfect for large motorized awnings spanning 20–30 feet.

Downtown and Central Toronto

The Annex, Cabbagetown, St. Lawrence, Harbourfront, Liberty Village, Trinity-Bellwoods — Dense urban settings with narrow lots, rooftop terraces, and restaurant patios. We install on the backyards of Annex Victorians, heritage-designated properties in Cabbagetown, and commercial patio installations along King West and Queen West. Permit and heritage considerations are assessed individually.

North Toronto and North York

North York, Don Mills, Willowdale, Bayview Village, York Mills — North Toronto’s larger suburban lots and mid-century builds often have expansive backyard decks that benefit from wide, multi-unit awning configurations. North York’s post-war bungalows have wood-frame fascia that accepts standard lag-bolt mounting.

Scarborough

Scarborough, Birchcliff, Cliffside, Warden Woods, Agincourt, Malvern, Rouge — Our home base. We serve all of Scarborough from our homebase on Briar Dale Blvd, with the fastest response times in this area.

Retractable Awnings in Toronto — Your Questions Answered

Get answers to the most common questions about retractable awning installation in Toronto.

Manual retractable awnings start at $3,500 installed for standard sizes (up to roughly 12 ft wide). Motorized awnings with a Somfy motor start at $4,500. Cassette awnings with full enclosures start at $5,500. Your exact price depends on width, projection, fabric, frame colour, and any add-ons like wind sensors, sun sensors, or LED lighting strips. We provide free, no-obligation on-site quotes — a specific installed price, not a range.

Yes. We serve all of Toronto — The Beaches, Leslieville, Riverdale, Danforth, East York, Roncesvalles, High Park, Etobicoke, Midtown, Leaside, Lawrence Park, Forest Hill, The Annex, Cabbagetown, Harbourfront, North York, Scarborough, and everywhere in between. We are based in Scarborough and can reach any Toronto neighbourhood quickly.

Yes — brick mounting is our standard installation method for Toronto. We use stainless-steel masonry sleeve anchors appropriate for the brick type and wall construction. This is completely reversible — if you ever sell the home, the anchors can be removed and the holes filled without any visible impact on the brick face. We assess brick condition during the consultation and will flag any concerns before we drill.

In most cases, no. Retractable awnings are reversible and do not structurally alter the building, so they typically fall outside the scope of what requires Heritage Preservation Services review — even on designated properties. Properties in Heritage Conservation Districts (Cabbagetown, Roncesvalles, Wychwood Park) may have additional considerations, and Jamie will advise during your consultation. We recommend consulting your property’s designation statement if you are unsure.

Yes. Second-storey installations are common in Toronto — especially on the raised rear decks of semi-detached and detached homes throughout East Toronto, Midtown, and North York. Mounting method depends on your home’s construction: wall mounting above the upper door, soffit/fascia mounting, or rafter-tie brackets. Jamie evaluates the best approach on-site and builds it into your quote.

Manual awnings use a detachable hand crank — no electrical work, simple and reliable. Motorized awnings use a Somfy motor operated by remote, wall switch, or smartphone app, and can add wind and sun sensors for automatic operation. Both types use the same premium frames and Sunbrella fabrics, so durability and shade quality are identical. The choice comes down to convenience and budget.

Yes, and the effect is amplified by Toronto’s urban heat island. By blocking direct sun from hitting south and west-facing windows and sliding doors, a properly sized awning can reduce indoor cooling demand by up to 25%. For Toronto Hydro customers, who pay tiered time-of-use rates that peak during the summer afternoons when you are most likely to be running air conditioning, the savings are real and measurable.

In most cases, no. Retractable awnings are not classified as permanent structures under the Ontario Building Code. The exception is commercial awnings that project over a public right-of-way — these may require a sign or encroachment permit from the City of Toronto. Residential installations on private property, including rear and side yard patios, do not typically require a permit. Jamie confirms during the consultation if your specific situation is an exception.

From first contact to completed installation is typically 4–6 weeks. The first week is consultation, quote review, and decision. Once you proceed, we place the manufacturing order — lead time is typically 3–5 weeks. Once the awning arrives, we schedule installation, which most often takes 2–4 hours. We work evenings and weekends for consultations to fit around your schedule.

You retract it at the end of the season — typically in October — and leave it retracted until spring. A retracted open-roll awning sits flush against the house on the roller bar; a cassette awning is fully enclosed in its housing. The aluminum frame handles Toronto’s freeze-thaw cycles without corrosion or warping. No removal, no winterization, no off-site storage. When the weather turns warm again, extend and use.
